Helen Butlin
(She/Her/Hers)
PhD, RP
Helen Butlin brings 25 years of experience as a psychotherapist (Registered since 2015 with CRPO) with ten years specializing in oncology in a large regional medical cancer treatment centre. During those years on the Supportive Care team in a spiritual-existential counselling role she developed a unique method for guiding individuals in the art and science of cultivating personal wisdom for living with life-altering cancer diagnoses. This individual and group process became titled, “Soul-Medicine” informed by Carl Jung’s depth psychology for linking our conscious mind with the deep, embodied, intuitive wisdom of the whole human psyche and contemporary psychological interventions for restoring well-being, mental health, and fostering inner strengths.
Soul-Medicine groups became the basis of her research for her doctoral study. This methodology integrates Jung’s central tenet that we have an adaptive capacity to generate the wisdom we need for whatever challenges we are facing. Helen integrates Jung’s insights with Mindful Self-Compassion and Polyvagal Therapy which enable us to learn how to ground our body into anchored states for clearing fear, handling uncertainty, listening to our embodied intuition and ‘knowing’ for meeting difficult decisions, facing challenges, being self-compassionate when we are in acute distress and grief, and discovering the glimmers in the present moment that feed a sense of hope, inner strength, connection, renewal of embodied presence. In so doing, cultivating this ‘wisdom-making’ capacity using specific skills that integrate into your own unique ‘wisdom-compass’ that guides you, day to day in how to find what you need from within and without.
Helen thus weaves the creative, intuitive, embodied, reflective, existential, spiritual, human and organic worlds together for harnessing what is your human birthright – to live each day shaped by our own wisdom for living in the present moment and navigating whatever arises with skills to stay grounded and capable of meeting what comes with hopeful inner strength, radical acceptance of ‘what is’, openness to moments of joy, grounding, peace, appreciation, self-compassion even in the midst of hardship and struggle.
Helen has extensive training in Mindful Self-Compassion, Polyvagal Therapy (nervous system regulation), complex trauma, treating existential-spiritual distress, and wisdom-centered approaches to healing drawn from many differing traditions. She developed Soul-Medicine For Living With Cancer Support Groups from her deep work with hundreds of cancer patients seeking something more than medical treatment alone. She has facilitated groups over many years and brings an organic approach to drawing out each group’s unique wisdom.
Helen holds a Ph.D. in health sciences with research focused on wisdom-formation in women living with cancer. She combines clinical expertise with personal understanding of what it means to find your way through life’s most challenging passages.

(She/Her/Hers)
Hi, my name is Julie. It’s a pleasure to connect with you, learn about your story, and accompany you on this journey of emotions and decisions.
The word cancer can evoke a sea of contradictions within us. I understand that it’s not always easy to comprehend, accept, or allow yourself the opportunity to experience more when everything feels chaotic and the future uncertain. Yet, despite every crisis or emotional impact, there is always hope, a hope that blossoms from our learning, experiences, support, and self-care.
I have been working as a clinical psychologist in Colombia and a psychotherapist in Ontario since 2008 and I have extensive experience supporting people facing acute, chronic and terminal illness. My approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy, valuing the balance between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I believe in understanding the roots of our current experiences while equipping you with strategies to face the future. My goal is to help you find calm, emotional support, meaning, and a perspective that empowers you to cope with physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual suffering.
I draw inspiration from these words from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, I hope they offer you some comfort too:
“It’s only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth, and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up, we will then begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had.”
Remember: you don’t have to go through this journey alone. There are many others who, like you and me, seek a meaningful and fulfilling life, a life filled with courage to move forward. Focusing on the present, without judging the past or worrying about the future, is essential to navigate the uncertainty that illness brings. I’d be honoured to join your care team, and support you on the path ahead.

Our lives move along at an astounding rate that flows and ebbs with every new occurrence and interaction. A diagnosis of cancer, for yourself or a loved one, halts that flow and forces us to stop and tend to immediate needs that may often feel overwhelming and unbelievable. You may find yourself feeling scared, angry, sad, isolated and alone with little ability to focus on managing anything other than this tremendous change in your life. This can feel overwhelming and, at times, unmanageable. I’m here to support you, to listen to you, and to care about you during these challenging times. My goal is to support you, wherever you are in this journey, from a place of compassion and knowledge. Having cared for my own family member during their time with cancer, I have the unique knowledge and experience to help me support you. I have been providing support for individuals managing life altering conditions for most of my 40-year career. I became a Social Worker and Psychotherapist after my family member illness. During that time, I became aware that there are few supports that care for the whole person and family. I believe individuals need to be supported in all areas of their lives, physical, emotional, spiritual and social. This is the belief at the EIR Centre and it resonates with my personal and professional approach to caring. I have been a Social Worker and Psychotherapist since 2015. I have provided counselling and support in medical settings for the past 10 years. I believe it is a privilege to support others during challenging and vulnerable times. I would find it an honour to support or your loved one during this time. If you feel I might be able to help, please reach out to me at the EIR Centre. I use a variety of evidence-based modalities to support others, Narrative therapy, Mindfulness and Attachment based skills, Trauma Stabilization, as well as Person Centered, Positive Psychology, and Strengths based approaches.

The science from several decades of usage of the Peter Hess® sound massage protocol in Germany and elsewhere is why I decided to become a certified Peter Hess® Sound Massage Practitioner. It is one of the most powerful modalities I have personally experienced.
The proven Peter Hess® Protocol works, which is why I love it, and trust it.
My comprehensive, world-class sound massage training, however, is just one step in a larger personal wellness and sound journey that I’ve embarked following bigger careers in journalism and corporate communications. If you are facing a life-threatening diagnosis, a chronic disease, are a survivor, or in recovery of some sort, you may find sound massage and other sound-related modalities supportive as they are tend to induce a deep state of relaxation, which in turn creates more optimal conditions for the body and mind to release stress, repair and work toward returning your whole self to harmony.
Sound massage can also be an excellent addition to existing self-care rituals, creating time to let go, and to rest, restore and renew for wellness optimization.
Since time immemorial, sound has also been an integral practice for the support grief and end-of-life transitions, and if that is your case, I would be happy to meet with you to discuss potential options, or even to collaborate with a trusted practitioner you already work with such as a grief counsellor or death doula to co-create an experience, with them, just for you.
I love creating and holding safe spaces for others on their own healing and wellness journeys and consider this is to be work in the realm of the divine.
